Training Needs Analysis is important for three reasons:

1. Identifies employee knowledge and performance gaps
2. Helps organizations efficiently build a targeted training plan
3. Provides insight into new training opportunities (e.g. different modalities and approaches)

Diagnostics tools help with both intrapersonal and interpersonal analysis. This helps the organisation and the employee perform better. There are many diagnostics tools and you must be careful to measure the right things. When HR departments do their own TNA, the trainer cannot be sure the right tool was used and only receives part of the analysis.

With the limited shared information and uncertainty about the tools used, a trainer cannot make the best match.

Trainers and training companies offering TNA as a service, have better insight into their customer issues and are able to provide better advice and increase their training effectiveness.

Being pro-active on the TNA also helps the trainer identify other issues or training needs. This creates opportunities to offer more services or involve partners.
